Impact and Butt-Monkeys – Someone’s Watching

thinking monkeySo, last night – last week by the time this publishes – I wrote about two deaths, my cousin who was about a year older than I am and my friend Mike Dorman – from high school. Well, really I knew Dorman in eighth grade but whose keeping track? I thought specifically about the memorial service we had for Dorman here in Tampa.

More on that in a bit.

Through some of the comments I received I stated to think about the impact we have on the lives of people around us and most of us will never know that impact this side of Heaven.

And maybe that’s a good thing.

500 Words and a Renewed Focus on Jesus

Photo By: Luigi Crespo (Creative Commons)How many times do we take on a challenge and see it through?

I mean really? For me, not often. Not often enough.

Today I reached the end of a 31 day writing challenge and honestly, thinking back to the first of January, I didn’t think I’d complete this one.

The challenge was to write at least 500 words a day for the month. Those were the rules. I didn’t have to write a book, blog post, poem, letter or anything that even made sense – I had several of those nights – the idea was just to get into the habit of writing.

I did it.

Disappointments? Yeah, I got ‘em.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:13-14 KJV).

I am working through a month long challenge wherein nearly 1700 people have committed to writing at least 500 words a day. Every day we’re given a writing prompt; some use it some do not – it is not part of the challenge to write what we’re told to write just that we write.

Colossians 3:23-24

“23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving (NIV).”

How many times have you read that verse and applied it to your J-O-B?

1? 10? 50? 100?

If you’re like me, you’ve probably done it more times than you care to remember. And the truth is, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that application.

Jesus Determines Your Value Not Your J-O-B

I have written a lot about the issues I have had at my J-O-Bs.

The image of myself I developed as a result of the positions I have held over the years. Thinking less of myself because I don’t carry a brief case or use a stethoscope and I don’t own my own business.  From an early age our society indoctrinates us to think that kids either grow to be doctors or lawyers or, really any job that requires the wearing of a tie, or you’re a loser.

Pick A Direction and GO!

cover picI often talk, here at PADAG, about finding God’s will for your life – as I have come to believe that’s part of what I can do to help people – find their way closer to God.

Something that I have struggled with for years is my own direction and the thing is the answer has always been right in from of me.

Sunday Mornings Are Not Sacred

I love Sunday mornings – always have, always will.

I like the early morning hours every day but there is something about Sunday that – to me – is special, and it is not attending a church service.

At least not always.

I believe that it was my spending time alone on Sunday mornings as a child that opened my eyes to the reality of a creator and God used that time to reveal himself to me even before I ever read a single word in the bible.

My 100th Post – A Recap and a Resolution

Wow! I made it to 100.

The amazingly sad thing about that is that I should have gotten here a long time ago. My last post was back in November and the last time there was substance was October. More on that in a minute.

It Was Not Jesus’ Will to Die

From Indian Jones and the Last Crusade

From Indian Jones and the Last Crusade

It is not always easy to follow God. This is a lesson I learned – ironically as  I taught it this morning.

Jesus knew the final outcome of his mission here on Earth. He knew that he would ascend to glory and sit at God’s right hand. He was with God when the plan was devised. He helped implement it from the beginning but he had to go through Hell to get there – literally.

God Does Not Want Your Dream to Become Windows XP

Microsoft Windows XP wordmark official.

Some time ago, I wrote about how our faith, according to Paul, can be shipwrecked but that I do not believe that means were rendered permanently useless. I believe that God uses that time – if we allow him – to help us grow and to teach us what we need to learn. Obviously, we can be obstinate and miss God’s lesson but that is our doing not his. You can read that post here.
