What if what you think doesn’t matter?
I mean, what you think of yourself.
Ouch! That’s harsh.
It is a kind of a hard thing to say, even to think.
But I believe it’s true.
I believe it because, in most cases, we believe what the world wants us to believe about ourselves.
We believe the lie that was told to us as kids.
“You’re not good enough.”
“You’re not smart enough to be a doctor.”
“You’re to short, fat, dumb, sensitive, ugly, pretty – yes, that can be a negative too.”
And we see and hear it come out of our own face holes as adults.
“That’s just how I am.”
“I’ll always be a loser.”
“I’ll never find someone to love me.”
“I’m always late.”
The fact is though, most of that is ONLY true because YOU believe it’s true but that is NOT what God says about you.
And who knows better, you or God?
Now, I know some of you don’t believe in God or Jesus and think these things don’t apply to you but, like it or not, the truth of God, applies to all of us regardless of our faith in him.
How do I know that?
Because in Genesis 1, verses 26 & 27, God creates man in HIS image.
There is no sin, no division, no arguments. At that point I history, there was only perfection.
Therefore, in God’s original design, all men were meant to be – and we all still are – image bearers of the Most High God. Again, even if you don’t accept it, the truth doesn’t change.
So, back to my point.
The thoughts and ideas you have about you, in 99% of the cases, were planted by unthinking, people.
People, who may have actually had your best interests in mind.
People doing the best they could.
People that thought they were doing you a favor.
The problem is – or was – they were programmed by the same world-like mechanism that was programming you.
A system that is meant to, ultimately, keep you stuck in a “less than” life.
How do I know?
Let’s look at Genesis 1 again.
“Be fruitful,” “multiply,” “replenish the earth,” and “subdue it.”
Not one word there to me, says anything about mediocrity or lack.
Yet, that’s how we allow ourselves to live – because we think we don’t deserve more.
We believe that we are unloved, unacceptable and incomplete in everything we do.
But God.
God’s word tells us we are loved, “so” loved in fact.
That we’re accepted and complete. *
Perhaps, if we – and I mean ALL OF US – paid more attention to what God says about us, gave more authority to the word of God and thought of ourselves in terms of what the Scriptures say, maybe we could make what we think actually matter…to more than just ourselves.
But it HAS to start with us.
*This is not an exhaustive list of the things God’s word says about us. I encourage you to take these and discover the rest – build your self-esteem and honor God with what He’s made you to be – I am confident that you’ll be blessed if you invest the time.
As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts.
