That title might be a little deceptive because, the truth is, I believe we are exactly what we think.
The problem is, as Christ followers, we tend to think the wrong things.
This pattern of thought can be a lifelong struggle. It has been for me and I am nowhere near having it all sorted – but thanks to scripture, I am working toward a better understanding of how to combat the “wrong thinking.”
If you’re like me, you’ve spent most of you life affirming and reaffirming – what really amounts to lies about your identity.
It’s basic neural programming, AKA – self-fulfilling prophecy.
Tell yourself something enough, it becomes your truth. “I’m too fat”, “I’m too short”, “I’m a loser, a waste of space”, – whatever.
Use your own adjective. They all work.
Maybe someone in you past called you one of these, or a similar, name and it stuck. For me – it’s the word “quitter.” The truth is, I cannot even remember who said it to me first- but I have been strengthening it my whole life.
Have I quit things in the past? Yes, yes I have but I am not a quitter.
How do I know? Because that’s not what scripture says.
What scripture says about me and for the purposes of this post – YOU, is this…
We are God’s Children. John 1:12 – But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.
God chose you before you were even born – Eph. 1:5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
God accepts you JUST AS YOU ARE – Romans 15:7 Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory.
That one bears repeating – God accepts you, right now, the way you are, how you look, your flaws, failures, hang-up, mistakes – you name it – HE takes it.
And this is just the beginning – believe me, there are more – perhaps I’ll post more later.
It’s time you and I start to repeating these truths to ourselves – it’s time we start believing God’s word about us and not what others say…
…not what WE say.
